Dr. Sarah Biss
How long have you worked in the Yukon?
What Yukon communities have you worked in?
What drew you to practice medicine in the Yukon?
- I first came up here as a locum for one of the doctors I had previously worked with as a resident. I was really drawn to Whitehorse as a new grad because of the collegiality of the more established physicians. I felt very mentored into life as a staff family physician, and it felt like a really safe environment to continue learning. I was also really drawn to the wide scope that I was able to practice here. When I first started, I was doing obstetrics, emergency, inpatient medicine as well as community clinics. I felt this gave me the opportunity to test the waters to see how I wanted to move forward in my career as a family physician. It's also just absolutely gorgeous here. It's amazing to be able to leave work and be on the trails with not another human being in sight within 10 minutes. It's small enough that you can bike anywhere in town and not need a car, which I love.
What do you love most about working here?
- My colleagues! We have such amazing people working here who you can run weird cases by, who will cover for you when you are sick or have an emergency and who will come for a bike ride with you after work or loan you their cabin for a weekend!
How do you like to unwind after a long shift?
- Mountain biking on Grey Mountain (which is a 2 minute ride from my house)
What is your favourite restaurant in YT?
- Big Bear Taphouse and Eatery
What is your favourite trail, view point or camping spot in YT? (Mountain biking trail, hiking trail, skiing trail etc.)
- Hilarious for mountain biking. It lives up to it's name, so fun.
What local cause are you passionate about?
- The Humane Society. I got both my dogs from here and they are the best. Everyone, get a dog!
How would your best friend describe you in 3 words?
- I actually asked my friends and came up with Generous, funny, dog-enthusiast. (hyphenated words count as 1 word, right?)
What's one thing - either healthcare related or not - you learned in the last month?
- I learned that if you tuck the box flap back into the aluminum foil box after you pull out how much you want, it makes a REALLY straight tear line.
