I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and your welcoming department in the ER. Everyone, from physicians, nurses, support staff, and patients, was very friendly. It was professionally rewarding to learn and work in a new system.– Dr. Garnett
Facilities
Whitehorse General Hospital (WGH) is a modern facility in a city of 34000 that provides the only emergency services to the Yukon Territory with a catchment size of over 43000, including the community of Atlin, BC.
It is supported by a cadre of experienced emergency nurses with an emergency nurse manager and a physician director.
Team
Our group is composed predominantly by family doctors with an interest in, and commitment to, emergency medicine; many of us maintain a primary care practice. The current roster has three physicians with emergency fellowships (CCFP-EM) and eleven family physicians with extensive emergency experience.
Scheduling
Scheduling includes double physician coverage during peak periods, and a second on-call system provides backup if required for patient load or acuity.
Patient volumes typically vary from 80-100 patients per day with a mixture of high and low acuity.
As for many similar-sized communities in Canada, there is some weighting toward low acuity presentations due to limitations of accessing primary care in the community.
Supports
Clinical care of emergency patients is supported by 24hr on-call anesthesia, general surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, and occasionally visiting specialists. Typically, anesthesia is available on short notice for airway assessments, procedural sedation, intubation, art lines and similar interventions for emergency patients.
Emergency physicians usually complete wound closures, reductions, and other procedures within their skill set, often in consultation with specialist services. They are, however, welcome to perform sedations, intubations and lines if aligned with their usual practice.
Admissions are completed by the attending emergency physician with coverage provided until transfer of care to the hospitalist at 8:00 am daily. Imaging modalities include XR, US, CT, and MRI.
Compensation
When you come up you can expect an orientation, IT support, integration into the ER team, support where you need it, and plenty of work!
Outside of the ED there are limitless opportunities for outdoor recreation and exploration, with endless mountains, rivers, lakes, extensive trail networks, as well as a modern indoor exercise and pool centre. There is even a day trip to Juneau Alaska on a catamaran from Skagway, a 2.5hr drive, that includes humpback and orca whale watching if you have an extra day and bring your passport.
Come work with us for a while, it will be an unforgettable experience!
