Community Description

The Village of Haines Junction lies on the edge of a vast and spectacular wilderness and is a gateway to Kluane National Park and Reserve. The community lies within the traditional territory of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, where Southern Tutchone people have resided for thousands of years.

Haines Junction is a two hour drive (154 kilometres) from Whitehorse, located at the junction of the Alaska and Haines Highways. In general, the catchment area for Haines Junction includes the Alaska Highway north to km 1630.4 (Christmas Creek) and south to km 1518.4 (Champagne) and Haines Highway west to km 102.2 (Summit).

Clinic Description

The Haines Junction Health Centre is equipped to provide daily clinics for emergency, acute and primary care, community health programs and 24-hour emergency services by Primary Health Care Nurses (PHCN) in the absence of a physician. Limited point of care testing, referred out specimen collection, limited x-rays, and EKGs are all performed in Haines Junction, as well as having telehealth capabilities.

The Haines Junction Health Centre is open from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm and is staffed with three (3) primary health care nurses practicing in an expanded scope of practise with rotating nurses on call 24/7/365 and a community public health nurse.

The health centre supports the delivery of primary care through itinerant physician services with one day clinics that occur three times per month.

Pharmacy services are limited to emergencies only with medication refills being mailed out or picked up in person from one of the Whitehorse pharmacies.

Ambulance services are provided by Emergency Medical Responders 24/7/365 on a volunteer basis as available. The community is within the medevac transportation aerodrome and services are available 24/7/365 for emergencies to the most suitable medical facility

Clinical Expectations

The physician will provide a minimum of 7.5 hours of clinic time per day, Monday to Friday.

Candidates must also demonstrate certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).

Remuneration

The contract provides for the following:

  • Sessional rate of $1,800.00
  • Travel time @ $816.00 per round trip
  • Travel mileage @ $219.40 (159 Km one way x .690 per km) per round trip
  • Per diem $128.45/day as per the Yukon Government Travel Directive

Accommodations 

Where accommodations cannot be provided at the Community Nursing Station, the expense is paid at actual cost to a maximum of $250 per night (receipts required)
