Hospitalist
Locum Required: June 18-24, 2025
Program Description
The Hospitalist service provides 24/7 coverage of inpatient care at Whitehorse General Hospital, serving adult patients who require admission for acute medical needs. In-patient coverage provided by the service includes approximately 60 general hospital beds in the Medical/Surgical Unit, Intensive Care Unit, and Mental Wellness Unit. Five Hospitalist physicians are scheduled per day, with a target load of 14 patients and maximum load of 18 patients. Physicians working within the Hospitalist service work on a seven-day schedule with 1-2 evening shifts/on-call.
The hospitalist physician works within their privileged scope of practice for ‘GP with ICU’. For circumstances that are beyond scope, the hospitalist will transfer care or consult, as appropriate.
Rostered physicians work together within their defined commitment to ensure the service deliverables are met including the services listed below. Rostered physicians are considered voting members of the service and contribute to decisions related to quality improvement and the operation of the service.
The following are the direct patient care and clinical administrative services provided by the physicians in the Hospitalist service:
- Admissions (within guidelines from 8:00am-11:00pm) and discharges
- Daily visits (with exception of ALC patients)
- Documentation
- Procedures within scope of practice
- Family meetings and coordination of care
- Inter-facility transfer and handover
- Multi-disciplinary rounding and discharge planning
- Consult with physicians and other care providers
- Collaboration on facility access and flow
- Collaboration to appropriate schedule coverage and staffing procedures

Contract Details
Remuneration for Committed Locums (those committed to work a minimum of 4 weeks per year) - A Minimum of $17,397
- Hospitalists work a 9-hour shift providing inpatient care for 7 consecutive days in a mix of day and evening shifts.
- The rate for hospitalists during the weekday is $269/hr through an alternate payment arrangement (contract) which is equivalent to $2,421 per shift.
- The rate for hospitalists during the weekend is $294/hr through an alternate payment arrangement (contract) which is equivalent to $2,646 per shift.
- On-Call Hospitalist services are provided from 2300-0800 by the physician covering the evening shift and is billed as follows:
- All services will be remunerated through the fee-for-system model
- On-Call hospitalist is eligible to bill Level 1 On Call stipend (currently $32.70 per unit) for these hours.
- Out of territory hospitalist locums are eligible to receive $500.00/day for each inbound and outbound travel day, to a maximum of 2 travel days for each required trip to Yukon.
Remuneration for Non-Committed Locums - A Minimum of $16,578
- Hospitalists work a 9-hour shift providing inpatient care for 7 consecutive days in a mix of day and evening shifts.
- The rate for hospitalists during the weekday is $256/hr through an alternate payment arrangement (contract) which is equivalent to $2,304 per shift.
- The rate for hospitalists during the weekend is $281/hr through an alternate payment arrangement (contract) which is equivalent to $2,529 per shift.
- On-Call Hospitalist services are provided from 2300-0800 by the physician covering the evening shift and is billed as follows:
- All services will be remunerated through the fee-for-system model
- On-Call hospitalist is eligible to bill Level 1 On Call stipend (currently $32.70 per unit) for these hours.
- Out of territory hospitalist locums are eligible to receive $500.00/day for each inbound and outbound travel day, to a maximum of 2 travel days for each required trip to Yukon.
Time Commitment
- Regular day shift – 9 hours per day; 0800-1700;
- Regular evening shift - 9 hours per day; 1400-2300;
- On-Call - 9 hours per call day; 2300-0800;
- Hospitalists are scheduled for 7 consecutive shifts, starting on Wednesday.
Shadow Billing
- All contracted physicians are required to shadow bill for services provided, either by paper claim or an electronic format that can be consumed by the claims processing system for Insured Health Services.

Contract conditions
- Ability to meet the following conditions are contractual requirements and are required in advance of the contract start date.
- Licensure with the Yukon Medical Council

Qualifications
- Education, Experience and Licensing:
- Eligible for licensure with the Yukon Medical Council
- Eligible for privileging with the Yukon Hospital Corporation
- Maintain membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association
- Experience providing inpatient care
