Opportunity Overview

Yukon Health and Social Services is seeking a physician to serve as Medical Director for Yukon Emergency Medical Services. The Medical Director will provide clinical leadership and medical oversight for the territory’s land and air ambulance services, helping ensure patient care is evidence-based, safe, consistent and aligned with applicable legislation, standards and priorities.

Program Description

Yukon EMS is a territorial ambulance service responding to approximately 15,000 calls annually. It operates a centralized dispatch centre in Whitehorse, land and air ambulance services, and a community-based EMS program. Paramedics are based in Whitehorse, Watson Lake and Dawson City; other Yukon communities are supported by volunteer Community Responders working in collaboration with Community Nursing.

The Medical Director reports administratively to the Chief, EMS and provides clinical oversight across EMS scopes of practice. Key responsibilities include:

• Establish and maintain clinical practice guidelines, medication and procedure authorizations, and risk-management processes.
• Lead quality assurance and quality improvement, including monthly case reviews, quarterly reporting and clinical improvement plans.
• Advise on EMS training, continuing education, scope-of-practice development and critical care endorsement examinations.
• Provide oversight and training for flight physicians and act as the Most Responsible Physician when aeromedical clinical disagreements require resolution.
• Collaborate with internal partners, hospital emergency departments and other healthcare providers, and support EMS research and patient-transfer work.
• Participate in clinical performance and misconduct reviews and attend relevant air medical or critical care transport conferences when requested.

Compensation

• $6,000 per month for medical administration and on-site visits, based on an anticipated commitment of approximately 30 hours per month for up to 12 months each year.
• The monthly service fee covers the full scope of work; services requested within the scope are not billed separately.

Schedule

• Approximately 30 hours per month.
• Work is scheduled in consultation with the Chief, EMS and includes regular quality assurance and improvement, guideline review, clinical education, case review and reporting.
• Availability for urgent clinical consultation is required as operationally needed.
• On-site presence in Yukon is required approximately six times per year.

Other Expenses

• Travel and meal expenses are reimbursed in accordance with current annual Government of Yukon travel rates.
• Accommodation for in-territory travel is reimbursed to a maximum of $200 per night.

Start date and term

• The anticipated start date is October 1, 2026, or as soon as mutually agreed, with a contract term ending March 31, 2029.

Time Commitment

• Regular hours: approximately 30 hours per month.
• Urgent consultation: as operationally required.

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must have:

• A minimum of five years of experience as an independent practitioner in an emergency department or critical care setting.
• A minimum of one year of additional training in Emergency Medicine or General Practice Anesthesia.
• Relevant experience and expertise appropriate to providing medical leadership and oversight for Yukon Emergency Medical Services.

Preferred:

• Fellowship or advanced training in Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine or Anesthesia.

Qualifications

Relevant Experience and Expertise:

• Senior clinical leadership and medical oversight experience relevant to EMS, pre-hospital care, aeromedical transport or inter-facility critical care transport.
• Experience developing and reviewing clinical guidelines and protocols, scope-of-practice changes, medication and procedure authorizations, and risk-management processes.
• Experience leading quality assurance and quality improvement, clinical case review, performance improvement and clinical reporting.
• Experience with clinical education, continuing professional development and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Expected Skills and Abilities

Candidates should also demonstrate:

• Strong clinical judgment and conflict-resolution skills in complex aeromedical and inter-facility transport situations.
• The ability to work effectively with EMS providers, educators, hospitals, physicians, nurses and other health-system partners across Yukon.
• Collaborative leadership and commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork.
• Ability to work across urban, rural and remote service environments.
• Demonstrated leadership in both clinical and non-clinical settings.

Selection Process

The selection process will follow a collaborative review involving representatives from the Government of Yukon’s Department of Health and Social Services.
