Dr. T. Ryan Warshawski
How long have you worked in the Yukon?
What Yukon communities have you worked in?
- Whitehorse, with medevac trips to various communities
What drew you to practice medicine in the Yukon?
- What started as a summer adventure turned into a decade—and the place where I’m now raising my family. This town, powered by resourceful generalists and supported by skilled specialists, has shaped me in ways I never expected. As an early-career physician, it challenged me to expand my expertise, sharpen my skills, and grow into a more capable professional. What was once just a temporary stop has become the foundation of both my career and my home.
What do you love most about working here?
- In this close-knit town, I know most of the doctors by name—a testament to the strong sense of community within our medical field. I love being part of a healthcare network where collaboration is seamless, and when a patient needs specialized care, I can quickly mobilize the right resources. It’s a place where medicine feels personal, and that makes all the difference.
How do you like to unwind after a long shift?
- I like to get my heart rate into zone 4. Generally this involves mountain biking, skate skiing, or a game of hockey.
What is your favourite restaurant in YT?
- My house with a few friends.
What is your favourite trail, view point or camping spot in YT? (Mountain biking trail, hiking trail, skiing trail etc.)
- There are far too many to name. Blown Away is short but sweet alpine biking, the Haines Pass in spring is magical, and the Peel Watershed is well worth exploring.
What local cause are you passionate about?
- Type I diabetes has a special place in my heart, and I've been known to be overly excited about the power of lentils and continuous glucose monitoring.
What's one thing - either healthcare related or not - you learned in the last month?
- A small propane stove is not enough to heat your wall tent at -28 C. You will have an unpleasant night, all your wet gear will freeze, and it will be totally worth it for fresh ski tracks.
Share a recent article/book you read that others should too.
- The Coddling of the American Mind and The Anxious Generation (both by Jonathan Haidt) are excellent and in my opinion must reads.
What's the next place on your travel bucket list?
- I want to take my family to New Zealand for 4 months. Anyone want to come be my locum?
