EOI: General Practice Oncology

Program Description

  • The Yukon Cancer Care Program is delivered at the Whitehorse General Hospital by a multidisciplinary Cancer Care team, consisting of nursing, pharmacists and administrative support staff. The GPOs work together as a group to ensure weekday coverage, with each GPO typically working one day per week. Daily hours may vary based on service needs, to provide treatment consultation and write orders for all patients booked on that day.
  • Physicians who are interested in working in this program but who don’t yet have the required additional training or certification are encouraged to apply. A conditional offer of a contract, subject to successful completion of Certification, may be provided with financial support to cover costs to complete the training.

Contract Details

Remuneration

  • Remuneration for this service is through an Alternative Payment Agreement (contract)
  • Rate = $262.00/hour

Other Expenses

  • Physicians may be eligible for funding to cover costs associated with receiving additional training subject to a 3-year Return of Service agreement.

Benefits

Benefits are provided through the Yukon Medical Association and may include:

  • Recruitment of up to $125,000 over 5 years ($25,000 per year)
  • Relocation (max $15,000 reimbursement),
  • CMPA reimbursement (100%),
  • parental benefit, locum support, CME and others outlined in detail on the YMA website

Shadow Billing

  • All contracted physicians are required to shadow bill for services provided, either by paper claim or an electronic format that can be consumed by the claims processing system for Insured Health Services. 

Start date and term

  • We are looking for a GPO to start as soon as possible but finding the right candidates is a priority. Start date is negotiable.

Time Commitment

  • Regular business hours – up to one day per week, up to 450 hours annually

Contract conditions

  • Ability to meet the following conditions are contractual requirements and are required in advance of the contract start date.
  • Licensure with the Yukon Medical Council

Qualifications

Education and Licensing:

  • Eligible for licensure with the Yukon Medical Council
  • Eligible for privileging with the Yukon Hospital Corporation
  • Certification in General Practice Oncology from BC Cancer or another recognized Canadian cancer care facility*
  • Maintain membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association

*Physicians who are willing to undertake oncology training through the BC Cancer GPO Education Program are encouraged to apply. (Please see additional details below, preference will be given to those able to complete this training in February 2026)

  • Demonstrated interests and/or commitment to providing oncology or related care within Yukon
  • Collaborative and committed to working within a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Culturally sensitive practice

Selection Process

  • The selection process will follow a collaborative review involving representatives from Yukon Government (Health and Social Services) and Yukon Hospital Corporation.

Additional Information - BC Cancer GPO Education Program

BC Cancer offers an 8-week General Practitioner in Oncology Education Program for community practitioners to gain the foundational oncology training and clinical experience required to deliver systemic therapy and supportive care within their local communities. The program is delivered in two components and offered twice annually:

  • Introductory Module: A four-week session offered every February and September at BC Cancer’s Vancouver Centre, focusing on medical, radiation, and pediatric oncology, as well as supportive care protocols.
  • Clinical Rotation: Thirty days of supervised clinical experience at the BC Cancer Vancouver Centre, tailored to community service needs.

BC Cancer has a separate application process for this education program, and physicians must apply directly in addition to this expressing interest. Interested physicians should first apply to this expression of interest and if successful then apply to the education program.
