Opportunity Overview

• Yukon Government is seeking a  physician to join the Palliative Care Program in Whitehorse, Yukon.
• This position has been established to support the delivery of community-based palliative care services and to enhance capacity within the existing palliative care team.
• The ideal candidate would demonstrate both willingness and ability to relocate to Whitehorse.

Program Description

• The Palliative Care Program provides consultative and direct care services to patients and families across multiple care settings, including patient homes, continuing care facilities, and Whitehorse General Hospital.
• The physician will work within a collaborative, interdisciplinary team to support high-quality palliative care delivery in Yukon.
• Scope of services includes:
  • Provision of direct patient care across community and facility-based settings
  • Consultation and support to physicians and interdisciplinary care teams
  • Participation in shared after hours support to ensure continuity of care
  • Support to patients and families through all stages of palliative care
  • Contribution to education and mentorship of health care providers
  • Participation in program development and quality improvement initiatives
• The current team consists of two palliative care physicians. This position is being added to support increased service demand and enhance sustainability of the program and will support continuity of care, service coverage and ongoing development of palliative care services in Yukon.

Compensation

• $281.66  per hour through an Alternative Payment Agreement (Contract) plus fee for service for On-Call as outlined in the Contract

Benefits

Benefits are provided through the Yukon Medical Association including:

• Recruitment incentive of up to $25,000 per year for 5 years (return of service applies)
• Relocation (up to $15,000 reimbursement),
• CMPA reimbursement (100%),
• CME support, parental benefits, locum support, and other provisions as outlined in the MOA on the YMA website

Schedule

• Flexible, within the context of continuous service provision and based on service requirements (including program development and education).
• Generally, Monday-Friday, with evenings and weekends as required for continuity of patient care.
• On-Call Coverage is shared to ensure continuity of service coverage and patient care. Schedule specifics to be determined and agreed upon collaboratively between palliative care physicians.

Shadow Billing

All contracted physicians are required to shadow bill for services provided, either by paper claim or an electronic format that can be consumed by the claims processing system for Insured Health Services. 

Start date and term

• We are looking for a Palliative Care physician to start as soon as possible but finding the right candidates is a priority. Start date is negotiable.

Time Commitment

• 850–950 hours annually, including a combination of clinical care and education/system support activities.

Eligibility Requirements

• Ability to meet the following conditions are contractual requirements and are required in advance of the contract start date.
• Licensure with the Yukon Medical Council

Qualifications

Education and Licensing:

• Eligible for licensure with the Yukon Medical Council
• Eligible for privileging with the Yukon Hospital Corporation
• Certificate of Added Competence (CAC) in palliative care is required
• Candidates in the process of obtaining CAC certification may be considered, with employment conditions dependent upon completion.
• Maintain membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association
